If
you send a package with perishable goods
like food, chemicals or pharmaceuticals
from, lets say Brussels to for example
Singapore by air freight cargo, you could
be surprised of the different temperatures
that surround the package during its
transport and storages at the different
airports. In the cargo of an airplane for
example, the temperature can go to -20°C.
At an airport, when the package is placed
on the airfield for overloading,
temperatures of +50°C or even +60°C are
measured in warm countries or even a
-35°C in cold countries. If you then know
that an overload can take several ours,
the temperature of your package will experience
a lot of extreme ups and downs.
The question is how the quality of your
goods will be influenced by these extreme
conditions.

Example
temperatures in Air cargo:
departure Brussels to
Singapore + stopover
in Dubai

Departure
sender
– Airport Brussels
A = Transport
from sender to Airport (= conditioned trailers / trucks)
B
= Storrage at the forwarder (= conditioned cool
chamber)
C
= Preparing the airplane pallet (= usualy not
conditioned)
D
= Tarmac time
= Driving the airplane pallet to the air plane + loading (=
outside temperatures in Brussels)
E = Flight
Brussel - Dubai (= in this example not conditioned)
|
|
Stopover
in Dubai
F = Landing +
taxi to unloading place
G
= Tarmac time
= Onloading the goods (= outside temperature in Dubai)
H
= Storrage in Dubai airport (= in this example
in a conditioned cool chamber)
I
= Tarmac
time = Driving the airplane pallet to the air
plane + loading (= outside temperatures in Dubai)
J = Flight Dubai
– Singapore (= in this example not conditioned)
|
|
Landing
in Singapore
K =
Landing + taxi to unloading place
L = Tarmac
time
= Onloading the goods (= outside temperature in Singapore)
M =
Storrage in Singapore Airport (= in this example in a
conditioned cool chamber)
N =
Transport from airport to customer
(= conditioned trailers / trucks)

The
graphic above shows a virtual temperature flow of an air
cargo shipment from sender (Brussels) to customer
(Singapore). In this graphic the possible temperatures are
shown in each point in which varables can occur depending on
the conditions. The purpose of this graphic is to visualize
the different temperatures (positive or negative) which can
occur if you send goods with air freight and how the
different actors as forwarders, airliners, cargo handling
agents, need to be equiped to maintain or keep certain
temperatures. As shown in the graphic, the temperatures can
decrease or increase extremely specialy during the tarmac
times in which the goods are standing outside.
The question hereby is if the quality of your goods is not
being influenced during these temperature fluctuantions and
a conditioning (active or passive
packaging
) of your goods is required.

Temax
insulation as a passive packaging
|
|
A
solution is to protect your goods with
insulated thermo blankets. Krautz has
developed a new unique insulation thermo
blanket that has been tested on
perishables in air freight cargo against
these extreme conditions and has been
called out as the best insulating thermo
blanket. More information on the insulating
thermo blanket material: see Passive
packaging
|
|
The Temax
insulated thermo blanket has a very light
weight, is flexible, is based on a
multilayer reflection technology so
it does not take on an own temperature, is
100% recyclable etc.. These advantages explain
why more and more conditioned or
chilled air freight cargo of perishables
goods are being sent with this unique
insulation

|
Tailor
made |
|
Krautz
is producer of this unique insulated
thermo blanket and offers the possibility
for tailor made solutions. The insulated
thermo blanket can be made on rolls so you
can wrap your goods or pallets or the
insulation can be produced as a tailor
made package.
