Freight
forwarding of perishables as fresh chiied and frozen foods
|
|
If
temperature sensitive food products such as perishables,
fresh, chilled, heated or frozen food products are being send
in a cold chain or transport system where active
cooling or passive
cooling is used, the actors in the cold chain,
being third parties to the producer as transport companies,
distribution centers, freight forwarders, airline or sea
freight companies etc… can decide or be obligated by the
food producer to extra insulation as thermal blankets to
ensure or guaranty the temperature of the goods in the CCP’s
“Critical Control Points” of the cold chain. The problem
with this way of transport is that some food producers claim
that their pallets may not be re-packed. This means that the
actor cannot place an insulation between the pallet and the
goods. A solution for this situation could be to use an extra
floating pallet on which the insulation is placed and on which
the pallet with the goods is loaded. This way of insulating
gives certain disadvantages like the extra height and extra
weight created by the extra pallet. Therefore it could be
advisable that the third party or actor in the cold chain, who
needs to insulate the pallet, convinces the producer to
pre-insulate the bottom at the production process so the third
party only needs to place the insulated cover and seal the
potential cold bridges meaning that the use of an extra pallet
can be avoided.

Temax insulation
for the actors in the cold chain
|
|
Below an example of an extra pallet or floating pallet
is shown on which the pre-packed pallet with temperature
sensitive pharmaceuticals from the producer is loaded. First
an insulated blanket is placed on the extra pallet on which
the pre-packed pallet is loaded. Next an insulated thermal
cover is pulled over the pre-packed pallet and potential cold
bridges are closed.
