| Freight
forwarding of temperature
sensitive pharmaceuticals and
medicines |
|
When
a producer of temperature
sensitive pharmaceuticals or
medicines puts its goods on
transport, a cold chain is
created in which active
cooling or passive
cooling can be used.
In this cold chain the actors in
the chain as transport
companies, distribution centers,
freight forwarders, airlines and
sea freight companies, etc…
have to decide which type of
cooling, active or passive, is
best used depending on the
costs, logistic processes,
handling etc… The problem with
pharmaceuticals is that ones the
package or pallet is made at the
producer, the actors in the
chain cannot open the pallet or
package and need to handle a
cross dock formula. This also
means that a pallet cannot be
repacked. Yet sometimes it is
required to extra insulate the
temperature sensitive goods to
prevent the temperature from
rising over, or sinking under,
the required temperature limits
of the products. Even if active
of passive cooling is used.
Therefore the pallet needs to be
insulated. |

Temax insulation for the actors in the cold chain
|
|
A
solution for this situation could be to use an extra floating
pallet on which the pallet with temperature sensitive goods is
placed. This floating pallet is first insulated with a thermal
blanket. As soon as the pallet with pharmaceuticals is placed
on the insulated pallet, an insulated cover or thermal
wrapping blanket could be used to insulate the
pharmaceuticals. This formula is already in use at some
freight forwarding companies. Another option could be to
convince the producer of the pharmaceuticals to already place
an insulated thermal blanket on their pallet on which the
goods are loaded so the freight forwarder does not need to use
an extra pallet and can just insulate the goods on the pallet.
With this formula it is important that the bottom insulation,
which has been placed at the producer, is sealing against the
insulation from the freight forwarder so no cold bridges are
formed.

|
|
|
Above
an example of an extra pallet or floating pallet is
shown on which the pre-packed pallet with temperature
sensitive pharmaceuticals from the producer is loaded.
First an insulated blanket is placed on the extra
pallet on which the pre-packed pallet is loaded. Next
an insulated thermal cover is pulled over the
pre-packed pallet and potential cold bridges are
closed.
