| Usage
of ice packs and gel packs as cooling
elements |
|
Ice
packs and gel packs are cooling elements
which are used to bring extra temperature
preservation in passive
cooling applications and
packaging. Ice packs and gel packs can be
produced as a single use or a multiple use
cooling element depending on the logistic
process of the customer. Ice packs and gel
packs gain their energy by the pre-cooling
or pre-heating of the elements in a
freezer or heating device. Ones the energy
has been stored the ice packs or gel packs
are placed with the temperature sensitive
goods within the passive cooling or
packaging. The temperature preservation of
the ice packs of gel packs is depending on
a number of variables as the consistence
of the ice pack or gel pack, the mass of
the temperature sensitive products, the
outer temperatures, the time of transport,
the insulation quality of the passive
cooling or packaging, etc…
|
|
.
|
| Mass
adding or extra temperature cooling |
|
When
temperature sensitive products need to be
extra cooled in order to keep the required
temperature preservation the choice could
be made to increase the thermal energy by
inclosing cooled ice packs or gel packs
within the passive cooling packaging or
the choice could be made to increase the
mass of the products, increasing the
global energy of the goods. Both are
cooling techniques which can be used to
increase the temperature preservation.

| Nature
friendly ice packs and gel packs |
|
The
company Krautz - Temax has started the
production of special nature friendly ice
packs and gel packs for single use passive
cooling applications. To do this the
packaging of the ice packs and gel packs
is recyclable and the consistence of the
fluids in the ice packs is nature
friendly. The goal of nature friendly ice
packs and gel packs is the easy waste
management at the receiver of the
temperature sensitive goods which where
cooled with the ice-packs. As the receiver
receives the goods, the ice packs or gel
packs are not used again so they need to
be destroyed. When the gel packs are
nature friendly, the consistence of the
ice pack can be used to water the plants
for example while the package is
recyclable so it can be placed with the
standard waste.

Flexible
ice pack Ti-foil
|
 |
Krautz
offers an unique ice pack called the
"Ti-foil". This ice pack
is available in a foil which has
multiple small cells (ca 5x3x0,5cm
thickness). Each cell has a special
substance which will grow to a big cell
of ca 3cm thickness when the
foil is placed in water. |
|
|
Once all
the cells are filled up, the foil
can be placed in a freezer or a
microwave over for cold or heated
purposes. Because of the special
substance that has combined with the
water, a special gel is formed which
keeps the temperature for a long
time. Seeing the foil (ca A4 format)
is build-up with multiple cells, the
foil is still flexible.
|
|
.
|
|
Cut
it to size
|
|

|
The
"Ti-foil" ice-pack is made
out of multiple cells. Between each
cell the foil can be cut with a scissor
so you can make your ice-pack
according to the size that you need
or want. |
