Sea freight or ocean freight of temperature sensitive goods

To ship goods worldwide, sea transport can be used. To achieve this, the goods are loaded in special sea containers which are placed on the ship. If these goods are temperature sensitive goods, a special sea container is used also called a reefer which is an insulated sea container equipped with a cooling engine which blows chilled or heated air over the goods to maintain the required temperature in the container also called an active cooling system. Temperature sensitive goods such as food products, pharmaceutical products or chemical products cannot be transported in the standard sea containers due to the extreme long sailing times that sea transport requires. Depending on the destination the transport can take up to weeks, even months. All this time the ship can be sailing in very extreme weather conditions as very hot or very cold. This means that during this long time the goods in the sea container are enduring these extreme weather and temperature conditions. The question than is what these extreme conditions will do to the quality of your goods and if it would be advisable to take extra measurements to keep the extreme conditions under control.

Next to a reefer, sea container with cooling engine, sea containers can also be equipped with a CO2 system which give the big advantage that no diesel fuel, avoiding emissions, is necessary. Yet this solution can only be used if chilled or frozen temperatures are required. The sea containers are also used in road transport so the goods do not need to be unloaded at the harbor. The sea containers are mostly loaded directly at the sender of the goods and are unloaded at the receiver of the goods. This also means that the sea-containers are influenced by the local weather conditions at the sender and the receiver.

Passive cooling in sea freight or ocean freight of temperature sensitive goods

Next to active cooling systems, also passive cooling systems can be used in sea freight of temperature sensitive products, meaning that the temperature of the temperature sensitive products are protected from unwanted external or outer temperatures with insulation materials. To achieve this the goods or the sea container can be specially insulated to keep or maintain the required temperatures of the goods. See page sea container insulation
